Why Colon Cancer Screening Is Important
According to the Center for Disease Control, colorectal cancer is the number 2 cause of cancer death in the U.S. Screening rates are still low, but as more people receive screening, more cases of colorectal cancer will be detected and treated before it is too late. The CDC recommends screening for all adults ages 50 - 75. Most of the time colorectal cancer begins as a small growth known as a polyp on the wall of the colon. Colon polyps are usually not cancerous at first, but they may develop into cancer with time. Although colon cancer is very prevalent, the good news is that it can be prevented or treated. Colon cancer screening and early detection is the key. If precancerous colon polyps are discovered during a colonoscopy, they can be removed before cancer develops.
