Colonoscopy: The Gold Standard in Colon Cancer Screening
Colon cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer, and when caught early, it’s also highly treatable. At Alaska Digestive & Liver Disease, with offices in Anchorage and Eagle River, AK, our board-certified gastroenterologists specialize in colon cancer prevention and screening through colonoscopy. We are proud to serve residents of Anchorage, Wasilla, Palmer, and the Mat-Su Valley.
Why Colonoscopy?
Colonoscopy is the most effective method of both screening and prevention of colon cancer. Your physician can examine the entire colon and rectum via a flexible, camera-equipped scope. And perhaps most importantly, polyps, or tiny tumors that may develop into cancer, can be removed during the procedure before they ever have a chance to harm. No other test possesses this potential for prevention and instant care all in one visit.
Unlike stool tests, colonoscopy provides immediate pictures of the lining of the colon and allows your doctor to take tissue samples if needed. It's also the best way to remove cancer if you have symptoms or risk factors.
When to Get Screened
Unless you have a specific risk factor, the majority of adults need to initiate colonoscopy screening at 45 years old. Your doctor might recommend an earlier or more frequent screening schedule if you carry one of these risk factors. Alaska Digestive & Liver Disease staff will help determine an appropriate screening regimen tailored to your specific needs.
What to Expect
Preparing for a colonoscopy starts the day before your procedure. You'll be instructed to follow a clear liquid diet and take a prescribed bowel prep to thoroughly cleanse your colon. On the day of the exam, you’ll be given sedation to keep you comfortable. The procedure typically lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, and most patients can return home the same day and resume regular activities by the following day.
If polyps or other abnormalities are found, they can be removed or biopsied during the same visit, eliminating the need for additional procedures.
