Endoscopy Procedures Performed in Alaska

Endoscopy Procedures Performed in Anchorage, Alaska

Endoscopy procedures involve looking inside hollow organs or cavities of the body for medical reasons.  Endoscopy is often used to examine the gastrointestinal tract for disturbances.  During an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (also known as an upper GI endoscopy or EGD) procedure an endoscope, a small flexible tube that acts like a camera, is used to inspect the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. Depending on what is found, your doctor may need to perform a procedure with the endoscope such as taking a photograph, removing a polyp or swallowed object, taking a tissue or cell sample, treating bleeding ulcers, or dilating a narrowed section of the esophagus.  An upper endoscopy usually takes from 15 to 45 minutes.

Some indications that you might want to schedule an upper GI endoscopy are:

  • abdominal pain
  • acid reflux
  • anemia
  • belching
  • bloating
  • difficult or painful swallowing
  • heartburn
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • weight loss
  • vomiting
